The Cascade, Mount Stuart

Despite being an absentee landlord for most of his life, John, 3rd Earl of Bute was among the handful of patriotic landowners Pennant singled out as model improvers. Supervising developments at a distance through correspondence, the earl also commissioned a series of views of his family seat on the Isle of Bute. This picture captures a waterfall, one of the many attractions on offer to travellers such as Pennant, who visited the island and the estate in June 1772.
