The pioneering tours of Scotland made by Thomas Pennant, William Gilpin, Samuel Johnson and James Boswell played a key role in defining two specific itineraries for travellers. Known as the Petit and the Long Tours, these followed the new military roads where possible and were the first to put many of Scotland’s iconic sites on the map.

The shorter circuit could be made in a fortnight travelling by chaise along the military roads. The long tour required more time, money and endurance and involved hiring horses, boats and ferries as well as local guides.
