Glen Tilt, 1785, from album of drawings with illustrations for Hutton
Hutton’s discovery of striking geological features in sites such as Glen Tilt, just north of present day Blair Atholl, enabled him to develop his theory around the formation of the crust of the Earth in innovative ways. Clerk of Eldin’s drawings, here aimed at highlighting specific features while locating the site of such geological features, suggest that the landed estate could be seen as a rural counterpart to urban learned spaces. Also featured in the plates of works like Pennant’s Tours, locations such as Glen Tilt appeared as sites of enquiry as well as places of scenic beauty.
