Falls on the river Braan (Rumbling Bridge)

In the hills above Dunkeld, successive dukes of Atholl fashioned a highly theatrical viewing experience. The dramatic landscape of spectacle and surprise they created involved dense tree planting and winding paths along the River Braan that led the visitor to a series of falls. Charles Steuart’s commission from the 3rd Duke of Atholl took in the Black Linn Falls as well as the gorge of the Rumbling Bridge, scenes clearly meant to bring the literary landscapes of Ossian’s verse to mind.
