Charles Steuart

A Waterfall

While most of Steuart’s works are of named, identifiable places, A Waterfall is a composite view bringing together elements inspired by pictures of similar subjects executed for the dukes of Atholl, such as the view of the Rumbling Bridge also included here. With its low viewpoint, framing foreground foliage, rustic stone bridge, wild, mountainous background and fast-running water falling into a deep gloomy pool, it anticipates the vogue for the Sublime and the Picturesque and provides a visual counterpart for the ruggedness and grandeur of Macpherson’s literary landscapes.
