Taking Down the Netherbow

Once the principal gateway into Edinburgh, the Netherbow was part of the capital’s defensive wall: it controlled the flow of trade and stood at the meeting point of three major arteries. John Runciman’s etching captures this historic landmark as it was being cleared away in the interests of better circulation. In some ways its demise was symbolic of recent warlike times firmly being consigned to the past.
