After Hutton’s death, the mathematician and natural historian John Playfair, together with the amateur geologist John Webb-Seymour, revisited Glen Tilt to select a collection of rocks that would match the features examined by their late friend in the 1780s. Although these rocks were not actually collected by Hutton, they are the closest surviving specimens in date anywhere.
