This depiction of a bustling thoroughfare would compare favourably with that of any major 18th-century European city. Knox’s striking perspective projects a regularised view of the city, which helps to bring together the otherwise socially diverse and fragmented panorama of the street. Some of the many figures animating the scene are drawn from a traditional iconography of urban life. Ohers are clearly-observed characters and personalities Knox would expect a local audience to recognise.
