Samuel Johnson’s three-month tour to the Highlands and the Hebrides was masterminded by his friend James Boswell, an advocate, journalist and writer born in Edinburgh. Roughly ten years after Johnson published his account of their journey, Boswell published his 'Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides' (1785). With the chatty informality of a ‘rough’ guide, it focuses on Johnson as it describes his adventures. Inspired by such stories, Trotter’s print shows Johnson in his travelling dress, striding through the Highlands.
