View of the Town of Bomore on the Island of Ila

Here, Banks’ artist addresses signs of change, depicting the new village of Bowmore. The brainchild of Islay’s owner, it was part of a resettlement scheme to move people from the old village of Killarrow, deemed too close to his newly extended Islay House. Its new position on the other side of Loch Indaal granted the Campbells greater privacy and better views over the sea loch while allowing them to keep an eye on the locals across the water in Bowmore.
