View of Inveraray
Together with its companion View of Inverary, a Seat belonging to His Grace the Duke of Argyle, 1746, this view was taken at a moment of dramatic change: the Duke of Argyll was launching plans to relocate the town of Inveraray and build a new castle in its place. The artist’s chosen viewpoint takes the viewer along the new military road linking Inveraray to Dumbarton. The old castle, about to be torn down, is just visible at the far right. In the companion view, Thomas looks towards this same spot from the headland where the town was to be relocated.
