Robert Kaye Greville

A Botanical Encampment at the Foot of Ben Voirlich, 22 June 1821

This lithograph published in a local newspaper is a reminder of the important role played by the University of Glasgow in the exploration of Scotland’s natural flora. The author of this image was a botanist, who often took part in exploratory botanical excursions around Scotland and the expedition was led by William Jackson Hooker (1785-1865). Appointed Chair of Botany at the University of Glasgow in 1820 he shared Hope’s belief in the merits of student field trips and was instrumental in developing organised botanical fieldwork as part of the university curriculum.
