George Garrard

Loch Ennoch in Thomas Thornton, A Sporting Tour through the Northern Parts of England, and Great Part of the Highlands of Scotland…

George Garrard, 'Loch Ennoch'

Based on a mid-1780s tour, Thornton’s focus on angling, hawking and shooting anticipates the popularity of Highland field sports associated with the Victorian era. While Thornton was mostly concerned with describing his own sporting prowess, the artist he chose introduced some gravitas to the visual documentation of the tour. Here, framed by the skeletal remains of horses, Garrard’s view of the wilderness of the Cairngorms comments on the association of death, decay and the majestic.
