Alexander Runciman belonged to the first generation of Scottish artists that profited from the growing interest in Scotland and developed new ways of framing its landscape. Here he used a low viewpoint and employed the architecture of the castle as a framing device to add drama to his composition. The resulting composition is highly theatrical, even stage set-like: it is reminiscent of the designs he was producing for Edinburgh’s Theatre Royal at the time.
