Robert Paul

View taken from the West of Glasgow Cathedral

Several of Paul’s views pivot around Glasgow Cathedral’s lofty spire. Here a line of carefully cropped and evenly planted trees denotes ‘Fir Park’, a detail that adds to the sense of design and management at work. Taken together, Paul’s scenes chart the urban expansion and commercial progress of Glasgow. Sent to patrons and contacts, they were used by the Foulis brothers to promote the work of their students.
