Not until the 18th century did spectacles, in their present form, begin to be worn. Sporting side shielding, some also offered green-tinted lenses against the sun’s reflection. These were popular with travellers, as exemplified by the frontispiece of John Bristed’s Athroplanomenos... and several other works included in this online exhibition.
