Sir John Sinclair visiting card

Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster was the editor of 'The Statistical Account of Scotland', a pioneering survey based upon questionnaires to Presbyterian ministers sent out in 1790 and 1791. In the appendix to his edition of the ‘Gaelic originals’ of Macpherson’s Ossian translations, Sinclair extracted reports from his account of Scotland identifying Ossianic sites, encouraging tourists to visit the rural settings of Ossian's “tales of other times”. Sinclair’s dedication to improvement is represented by the plough on his card.
