When off-duty from his role as chief draughtsman to the Military Survey of Scotland, Sandby spent time sketching local places and people. In this drawing the artist’s focus is on the hardship involved in the building of roads in difficult terrain such as the shore of Loch Lomond. It is one of the few surviving description of some of the people who actually carried out the brunt of the work behind the dramatic transformation of Scotland’s landscape,
