Thomas Pennant published several works on natural history, including 'British Zoology' (1766) and 'Arctic Zoology' (1784-87). A conscientious observer in the field, he collected specimens of plants, minerals, birds and animals. He also relied on a wide network of leading scientific figures of his day and encouraged fellow natural historians to engage with the natural history of Scotland. 'Lingusticum Scoticum', or Scottish liquorice, was first described in 1753. It was then widely consumed, both for nutrition and to combat scurvy.
