View of Inverary, a Seat belonging to His Grace the Duke of Argyle
By 1746 Thomas Sandby, Paul’s elder brother, was part of the retinue of the Duke of Cumberland. He began this fine but unfinished view of the Dukes of Argyll’s west-coast seat of Inveraray when he was stationed there during the ‘Forty-Five’. Together with its companion executed by his brother Paul, it documents the changes wrought by the laying out of the military roads. Here, the newly laid road from Dumbarton to Inveraray cuts through the middle of the drawing.
