John Knox

Highland Loch Scene (Loch Katrine)

Just like the other view of Loch Katrine this picture - recently identified as a view of Loch Katrine - captures the staged experience that awaited visitors to the area by the 1820s. Looking back across the loch from the south-west, Knox includes one of the wicker huts, seen more prominently in the other painting. Erected sometime before the 19th century, they provided visitors with a suitably rustic refuge from the weather and a place to sketch and admire "this wild and picturesque landscape”.
