Frontispiece to John Lightfoot, Flora Scotica: Or A Systematic Arrangement, in the Linnaean Method, of the Native Plants of Scotland and the Hebrides

John Lightfoot’s travels to Scotland were undertaken at the instigation of Pennant, who invited him to observe and record its botany during his five-month tour of 1772. Offering financial support, Pennant also encouraged Lightfoot to publish the first systematic description of Scotland’s flora, much to the chagrin of native naturalists.
