A selection of the Penicuik Drawings
Taken from the so-called ‘Penicuik drawings’, of which there are over 50, these sketches depict Jacobite troops and loyalist militia serving in and around the Clerk of Penicuik estate, on the banks of the River Esk, to the south of Edinburgh, at the time of the ‘Forty-Five’. Poking fun at both sides, the unknown artists summon something of the horrors of war and absurdity of military decorum with no more than a few scratches of the pen.
