View of the Island of Boo-sha-la and bending pillars with the bendng Pillars in its neighbourhood

The view of the adjacent isle of Boo-sha-la, showing the curvature of the columns along the shoreline, includes features not visible from such a vantage point. They are there to help convey as much information as possible to the viewer. Small narrative elements, such as the six armed men and a dog climbing or the small sailing boat at anchor, are also often found across Banks’ expedition drawings. Besides animating the scenes, they highlight the importance of ‘eye-witness’ testimony and provide a sense of scale.
