Eua no Fion or Fingalls Cave, on the Island of Staffa
Staffa is well-known for its five caves, the largest being Fingal’s cave. Apparently named in remembrance of James Macpherson’s Ossianic hero Fionn Mac Cumbail, its name in Gaelic translates as ‘The Melodious Cave’ (An Uamh Binn) and inspired Mendelsohnn to compose ‘The Fingal’s Cave Overture’ after his visit to the island in 1829. Here the artist regularises the height and shape of the basalt columns to emphasise their striking architectural qualities.
